The Pilates method was developed by the late Joseph Pilates, born in 1880 in Germany. In the early 1900's he began developing an exercise system, in response to his frailty in childhood when he was plagued by rickets and asthma. He developed talents in sports as varied as diving, gymnastics and boxing. He drew from these disciplines and formulated a system that worked for his own body, and eventually for others around him. |

He was interned in the first world war, where he taught his method to other internees, and successfully maintained their health through the an influenza epidemic of 1918. He then became an orderly in a hospital on the Isle of Man, where he began working with bed ridden patients. The doctors soon noticed the beneficial effect of the method. More...
